The gangway is a device used at modern large-scale oil terminals to ensure the safe and smooth boarding and disembarking of personnel during vessel operations at the berth. Traditionally, boarding is carried out using the ship's own accommodation ladder.

During the development of oil terminals, especially for modern large-scale terminals with unprotected dolphin-type berths, the quay is not continuous and is at a relatively high elevation. Ships frequently experience rolling and pitching during operations, with considerable amplitude. Due to the large fendering at the berth, the distance from the ship's side to the quay edge is significant. Under such conditions, the ship's own ladder is insufficient to provide safe access between the ship and shore.

Therefore, in modern large-scale oil terminals, to accelerate cargo operations and ensure the safety of personnel boarding and disembarking, gangways are used to replace the ship's accommodation ladders. Along with marine loading arms, gangways have become essential equipment for large-scale vessel operations at oil terminals.

Although gangways serve a relatively simple function, they operate in a complex environment. To adapt to the constantly moving interface between ship and shore and possible unforeseen conditions, their design must carefully consider local hydrological and meteorological data as well as characteristics of the vessels calling at the port. Appropriate operational conditions, structural schemes, and reliable safety measures must be determined to achieve the intended purpose.

To ensure safe operation of all transmission mechanisms, various safety devices are provided as needed. Main Technical Features of the Gangway

The gangways designed and manufactured by our company integrate the advantages of various existing gangways while overcoming their shortcomings, resulting in a device that is easy to operate, flexible, smooth, safe, reliable, and easy to maintain.

The main ladder structure is made of high-strength aluminum alloy LF5, ensuring both lightweight and safety.

The main ladder can be designed as either fixed-length or telescopic, depending on the type of vessel, to meet the deck interface requirements of smaller ships.

The steps adopt a four-bar linkage mechanism, allowing the ladder to operate within a -45° to 85° range, while keeping the steps always horizontal.

The triangular ladder and front ladder are connected via a single-point connection, allowing the spring-buffered casters at the bottom of the triangular ladder to maintain stable contact with the ship deck regardless of vessel rolling or uneven deck surfaces. Rubber or nylon casters are used to isolate the gangway from stray currents of the oil tanker.

The hydraulic system is reasonably laid out, well-sealed, and easy to maintain.

The lifting mechanism has excellent locking performance and features interlocking functionality.

Types and Scope of Application of Gangways

 

 

(1) GW1 Column Type Gangway

The GW1 Column Type Gangway consists of the main ladder, front ladder, triangular ladder, rotating platform, traction mechanism, column, and electro-hydraulic system. The gangway is operated by hydraulic cylinders that adjust the angle of the main and front ladders, while a hydraulic rotation mechanism drives the entire gangway to rotate in the horizontal plane. After docking, the rotation cylinder has a floating function and does not require counterweights. This type is suitable for terminals handling vessels up to 80,000 DWT.

(2) GW2 Tower Type Gangway

The GW2 Tower Type Gangway consists of the main ladder, front ladder, rotating platform, lifting mechanism, tower, and electro-hydraulic control system. This gangway is equipped with multiple platforms, with the triangular ladder, front ladder, and main ladder forming an articulated arm layout, providing a wider operational range. The ladders are actuated by hydraulic cylinders for pitch and telescopic movement. The rotation cylinder drives the platform to rotate ±90° in the horizontal plane, while a reduction gearbox with pulley system enables the platform and entire ladder to be raised or lowered. After docking, the rotation mechanism and main ladder have floating capability. This type is suitable for terminals handling vessels above 50,000 DWT.
